A Wallet code and a friend gift arrive differently

Steam offers a direct Digital Gift Card service that sends value to a selected friend. Its FAQ says an accepted gift enters the recipient's Wallet and is converted into the recipient's currency. A retailer-supplied Wallet code is a separate route. Identify what the listing actually delivers before comparing amounts: an existing code, a game license, and a friend-to-friend gift are different products. The conversion explanation for Steam's own gifting checkout should not be treated as a compatibility guarantee for an independent code.

Read the current Wallet currency restriction

Steam's Wallet support notice describes changes intended to reduce gift-card scams, including limiting code redemption to the currency of the account's Wallet. Sign in to the intended account and establish that currency before choosing a code. Some older Steam redemption text still describes conversion, so the current restriction notice deserves particular attention. A country flag or a familiar dollar symbol in product artwork does not resolve a mismatch. Ask for the specific code's documented compatibility when the account and listing use different currencies.

Redeem into the intended account

The Wallet FAQ directs users to sign in and open Steam's Wallet-code redemption page, enter the unique code, and continue. Check the signed-in identity first, then inspect the resulting balance before starting a game purchase. Keep the order record and exact error message if redemption fails. For a present, ask the recipient to verify their own Wallet currency; they do not need to share an account password with a seller or with the person buying the gift.

Separate existing cards from future supply

Valve's current notice says physical retail gift-card sales are ending and expects retailers to run out by the end of 2026. It also says existing cards remain redeemable subject to applicable rules, while direct digital gifting continues. This is a supply distinction rather than proof that any particular retailer has valid stock. PinGifts catalog variants remain subject to supplier, currency and inventory review; a listed denomination alone does not establish purchasing availability.
