Buying a PlayStation gift card for a child account

For a child account, wallet funds, spending permission and access to a game are separate checks. Coordinate the gift with the family manager first.

Agree with the adult who manages the family

PlayStationโ€™s voucher instructions say wallet top-up codes for a childโ€™s spending belong on the family managerโ€™s account. Before choosing a gift, find out which adult manages the PlayStation family and let that adult coordinate redemption. Sending a code directly to the child does not resolve the family-wallet setup.

If the family has not been configured, PlayStation provides a separate setup process for adding child members and assigning parent or guardian roles. Complete that account structure before treating the gift card as a ready-to-spend allowance.

Check the wallet and the monthly limit separately

A childโ€™s Store purchase draws from the family managerโ€™s wallet. PlayStation also applies a monthly spending limit, which starts at zero by default. Adding funds therefore does not automatically authorize the child to spend them.

Our practical check is to compare the intended purchase with both the available funds and the childโ€™s remaining allowance. If the wallet has money but checkout is blocked, adding another card may leave the actual issue unchanged. The family manager should inspect the childโ€™s current spending settings first.

A spending allowance does not change a gameโ€™s access rules

PlayStation lists age-related game restrictions and spending controls separately. Before buying credit for a particular title, the adult should check whether that title is appropriate and allowed for the childโ€™s account. A successful wallet top-up is not a decision about the game itself.

Avoid using another adultโ€™s account simply to get past a child-account restriction. Coordinate the purchase within the familyโ€™s chosen settings, with the family manager responsible for any permitted changes. This keeps the gift attached to the intended player and the householdโ€™s purchasing decisions.

Make the gift handoff easy to understand

Send the adult the card amount, its specified country and a private copy of the code. Include the intended recipientโ€™s name and purpose as a separate note. Let the family manager decide when to redeem and how much spending to permit; do not ask anyone to send you their account password.
